Lesson – Working with Rules

NOTE If the first rule in the Rules and Alerts dialog box deletes messages, none of the subsequent rules are applied to any message that meet the conditions of the first rule. Therefore, place any rule that deletes messages at the bottom of the rules list box.

When creating a simple rule based on an existing message, use the Create Rule button, which creates a rule by example. For instance, Outlook can immediately alert you when messages from a specific sender or about a particular subject arrive.

When creating a rule based on an example, you can specify conditions that include the message sender’s name, the subject text, and that the message must be sent only to you. For new messages that match the rules, Outlook can display a New Item Alerts window, play a sound, move the message to a particular folder, or any combination of these actions.

NOTE If you need to expand the rule to include more options, select the Advanced Options button to open the Rules Wizard dialog box.
