Lesson – Working with Baselines
The Work table displays information regarding the number of hours required for each task. It displays the total work, baseline, actual, and remaining work values. It also displays the variance between the total work and baseline values, and the percentage complete for each task. Tasks that have not started display 0 hours of actual work and the remaining work amount equals the total work value. Once the project starts and you enter actual information, the Actual field will display the actual hours of work. Completed tasks display 100% in the % W. Comp. field.

Discussion
The baseline plan is the original project plan you save to track progress. The baseline plan includes task start and finish dates, as well as resource and cost information. Use the baseline to compare with the actual data recorded as your plan progresses. This information may also be useful when the project is completed if you have a similar project in the future. When you create a baseline plan, Microsoft Project copies the plan information for dates, work, and cost entered from the current fields into the baseline fields. Baselines can be saved at any time, but it is a good idea to wait until you have completely entered the plan. If you need to change the plan later, save the baseline again or save an interim plan.
