Lesson – Scheduling Tasks
L INKING T ASKS
Discussion
Linking tasks sets up a dependency relationship between two or more tasks. The Finish-to-Start relationship is the default relationship when two tasks are linked; the start of one task is dependent upon the completion of another.
Microsoft Project offers several methods that you can use to link tasks. To create a default Finish-to-Start relationship between selected tasks, use the Task ribbon , Scheduling group Link Tasks button. You can also create links from the Task ribbon , Properties group Task Information dialog box
Link single consecutive and multiple consecutive tasks, as well as two or more non- consecutive tasks. When you link tasks, a line with an arrow appears on the Gantt chart to identify the relationship between the tasks. This line is referred to as a link line.
NOTE Quickly display the Gantt bar for a selected task by clicking the Task ribbon , Editing group Scroll to task button . Create a Finish-to-Start link by dragging the predecessor Gantt bar to the successor Gantt bar. This method is not recommended because of unintentional problems it can cause.
Procedures
1. Display the Task ribbon. 2. Select two or more tasks you want to link using the [Shift] key for consecutive tasks or the [Ctrl] key for nonconsecutive tasks. If you are using the [Ctrl] key, remember to select the predecessor task first, then [Ctrl] on the successor task. If you do not, the link will be a Start-to-Finish not a Finish-to-Start.
