1. Double-click the link line between the tasks for which you want to enter a lag or lead time. The Task Dependency dialog box opens. 2. Enter the desired lag or lead time in the Lag spin box. The lag or lead time appears in the Lag spin box.

Double-click the link line between the 10 Build Foundation and 13 Construct Frame tasks.

Click Lag

to 2d.

3. Select OK .

The Task Dependency dialog box closes and the Gantt chart changes to reflect the lag or lead time entered.

Notice the change in the link line between the Build Foundation and Construct Frame tasks. Point to the link line to see that Lag: 2d appears in the ScreenTip.

Practice the Concept: Apply a lead time of one day between the 14 Frame House and 16 Build Deck tasks.

Point to the link line to see that Lag: -1d appears in the ScreenTip.

A PPLYING A C ONSTRAINT



Discussion

Most of the time, you will schedule a project from a start date forward. In this situation, when you add a task to the project, it is automatically scheduled to start as soon as possible. Some tasks, however, may be subject to deadlines imposed by customers or internal company needs. These deadlines or restrictions are called constraints. For example, you cannot begin digging the foundation until a specific date because the equipment will not be available until that time.
