Lesson 4 – Integrating with Microsoft Office
SharePoint 2016
TOPIC A: A CCESS AND S AVE S HARE P OINT D OCUMENTS WITH M ICROSOFT O FFICE At the most fundamental level, to work with documents in SharePoint, Microsoft Office applications have to see and be able to access the documents and content stored in SharePoint. In this topic, you will use Microsoft Office applications to access, create, update, and save documents in SharePoint. S HARE P OINT I NTEGRATION WITH O FFICE Microsoft Office applications have historically integrated well with SharePoint. Office 2013 and SharePoint 2013 offer even tighter integration. The 2013 versions of both Office and SharePoint have been re-engineered with an emphasis on social networking features and access to cloud services. In addition, there are many enhancements that make accessing content and data stored in SharePoint easy and seamless from Office applications. The key integration points that make everyday interaction between Office and SharePoint easier are listed in the table.
DESCRIPTION
INTEGRATION
Easy access from Office apps
You can easily open and save content in SharePoint directly from your Office applications; you don't have to open the content in SharePoint. You can add shortcuts to your favorite SharePoint libraries directly to your Office applications. Both Office and SharePoint support synchronization of files to OneDrive® for offline use. This is covered in more detail in a later lesson. Office applications are version and check-out aware and will notify you if you are opening a document in one of those states. Office applications will provide you with all SharePoint options for working with those features effectively. You can synchronize SharePoint libraries and lists with Microsoft® Outlook® so that you can view and work with documents, as well as list and calendar information directly from Outlook.
