Lists information can be exported to Excel for data analysis and many list type can be connected to Outlook for quick access.

URL P ATH L ENGTH L IMITATIONS Depending the server configuration and the browser end-user are using, the URL Path Length Limitation will vary. However, a standard URL limitation is 256 characters . As you create a new List or Library, the Name you assign to it become part of its URL that cannot be changed once created. As a site owner, you will need to take the URL Path Length Limitation into consideration as you develop and configure your SharePoint sites. Here are a couple of guidelines to implement as best practices to avoid running into the URL Path Length Limitation : • Avoid special characters as they are restricted and/or make URLs more difficult to use. o Use alphanumeric characters (0-9, a-z, A-Z). o Special characters to avoid (; / ? : @ = & " < > # % { } | \ ^ ~ [ ] `). • Spaces are restricted in URLs. Every space automatically gets replaced by %20 , using three characters instead of one, getting you closer to the URL Path Length Limitation. o The name Fall Conference Schedule would be converted to Fall%20Conference%20Schedule . o Use FallConferenceSchedule or Fall-Conference-Schedule . (avoid using underscores to separate works as they get appear hidden in hyperlink’s underline and may be mistaken by spaces. • Keep URLs as short as possible while keeping it relevant. Two ways you can do this is by using abbreviations or acronyms. o Instead or Fall Conference Schedule , use fallconfsched . o Instead of Human Resources News , use hrnews .) While implementing the best practices above will help you avoid running into the URL Path Length Limitation , those names are usually not user-friendly. Once the list or library is created with the URL friendly name, a site owner can rename the list or library to a more user-friendly name.
